As part of
WAFA
Relief project to help needy poor families,
WAFA Relief
started the first phase
of the project by helping 10 needy families in Ethiopia.
The project started in
January 2005.
WAFA Relief will work through Ogaden
Welfare & Development
Association (OWDA).
Background and Justification
Ogaden is among the poorly
developed regions of Ethiopia, which is located in Eastern part
of the country. The Region has heavily and repeatedly been
affected by both natural (droughts) and man-made disasters.
Because of such problems in general and cyclical droughts in the
region for the last 3-5 years in particular, several thousands
of families of the region were internally displaced. During the
incidence, quite a big number of families lost their livestock
and were left abandoned and poor. Thus, the needy families are
now literally dependent on insufficient and infrequent supply of
emergency relief and similar assistances being offered by
humanitarian organizations presently operating in the region.
Project Objectives
The Project
has two major objectives:
- To
assist and bring-up the destitute families by catering food
rations,
shelter, clothing, basic education and health services.
- To
enable the children become economically self-sufficient and
self-
supportive through their education
Project Benefits
The majority
impacts and /or benefits of the program will be:-
-
Improvement and maintenances of the nutritional status of
the needy
poor
families at acceptable level and thereby avoiding severe
malnutrition;
- Access to
the basic social services (health, Education, ....etc) to
the children
of poor families.
Organization & Management
As the
initiator and holder of the Project, OWDA will be for the
implementation of the project. Government and community
organizations will participate in the project implementation
process as required.
